Chen was arrested and confined in 2006 for four years and three month for damaging property and organizing a mob to disturb traffic. His supporters maintain that the charges were false and that he was being punished for speaking out about China’s abusive family planning policies, including forced abortions and sterilizations. Now, according to Chen who is currently in a Beijing hospital with his wife and two children, his family members are being attacked by the police and government thugs. His brother was taken from his home and his nephew and sister-in-law were violently beaten. His nephew, who was trying to defend himself, now faces charges of homicide. This all comes after Chen spent six days in the US Embassy and then was transferred to a hospital. He now is pleading to be allowed to leave China. According to Representative Christopher Smith, R-New Jersey, Chen’s confinement in the hospital room is really house arrest, and Chen is no longer able to communicate with his relatives because all of his communication tools have been taken away. Chen does have telephone calls with the US Embassy, but Americans are barred from entering the heavily guarded hospital building. Chen is hoping to receive a student visa from the US Embassy and study at New York University.

As Americans and as Catholics we cannot forget about Chen. He is trying to protect women and unborn children and he is exercising a right that we often take for granted, freedom of speech. Can you imagine fighting for a cause and ending up in prison or under house arrest because the government did not agree with you? It is hard to believe that, even if he did “disturb traffic”, he would be punished for more than four years. It is also difficult to understand why the US Embassy let him leave their protection, and I have never heard of a “heavily guarded hospital”. It sounds to me like Chen and his wife and children are all in prison now. The only way Chen will get out alive is if America does not forget him and his family. Unfortunately, Chen will not be able to take his entire family with him when he leaves, and this is probably the most difficult part. Already, he knows that his family is being targeted and hurt, and who knows what will happen to them when he is safely in the United States. Chen’s story shows us how brutal China is toward its people. Women are forced to have abortions and be sterilized because of China’s one child policy, and people like Chen and his family are terrorized for trying to protect Chinese women and their unborn children. We just can’t forget Chen and his family because he is living and practicing all that we in America believe in.
http://tinyurl.com/last-wwn-for-davis-for-real

Over the past weekend the mutilated bodies of 49 people were found on the side of a road in Mexico. The police say it was most likely part of the rivalries between drug cartels. One Mexican official said there has been a series of extremely inhumane acts within the last few weeks, and this is most likely another one. This probably is a result between the two cartels known as the Zetas and the Sinaloa. More than 47,000 people have died in drug-related violence in Mexico since December 2006 when the Mexican government announced plans to combat cartels. The bodies were found about 80 miles southwest of the U.S.-Mexican border. A message written on a wall nearby is belied to refer to the Zetas. The Zeta were formed my Mexican Army deserters and served as the armed branch of the Gulf cartel, but broke away in 2010. Analysts believe that the Sinaloa cartel is allies with the Gulf cartel, making the combo one of the most powerful in Mexico. The leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera is widely known as Mexico’s most wanted fugitive, his net worth being $1 billion as of March 2012. Authorities are still identifying the bodies, which may prove difficult because they are missing limbs and/or are decapitated.

I’ve done a weekly world news post on the violence in Mexico before. This time it is much more grim and gruesome. This is a perfect example of how bad the violence has gotten in Mexico over the past few years. It has really escalated and has turned into what many would agree with is the biggest problem in Mexico. The drug wars are tearing the country apart. Over the last 5½ years 47,000 people have been killed in drug-related incidents. That is a very large number, and I had to do a double take to make sure I was reading it correctly. The article talks about one of the problems being that local police are paid less than authorities, making them easier to corrupt. This is where the problem starts. If your local law enforcement is working with the cartels you have already lost the fight. That makes the situation seem hopeless. From 2010 to 2011, drug-related deaths in the city of Nueva Leon have tripled. Some of you may remember the attack on a casino that was a weekly world news post back in August. The bodies that were found over the weekend were in the same state that the casino attack took place. That goes to show how dangerous and corrupt it is in that particular region, and I feel bad for anyone who lives there. They can’t possibly feel safe when they go to sleep at night. They need to worry about their own safety and protection, for the local police may be corrupted and not help. The drug wars in Mexico have shown how devastating they are and how much of a problem they have proven to be. I wonder how Mexico is going to solve this problem, if that is even possible.

The fighting between The people in Democratic Republic of Congo is causing the mountain gorillas critically endangered species to die out and be hunted. Only two of the 5-mountain protection post are still used today after the fighting intensified and rebels reportedly moved into the area. The gorillas are taking fire from artillery but first they are saving the staff and then are going to come back for the gorillas. According to CNN "Mountain gorillas are critically endangered with fewer than 800 left in the wild in the mountains of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. Some 200 are thought to live in the Virunga National Park." The world’s mountain gorilla population is in Virunga and there are only 500 there and 800 in the world. According to CNN "Mountain gorillas are not frequently hunted for their meat, but can be maimed or killed by poachers leaving traps or snares for other animals. They have also been killed for their body parts to be sold to collectors."

Personally I believe that we should help the gorillas and the humans at the same time so we don’t have to go back and risk more lives as it sounds like we could do. I hope that we can save these poor gorillas because there lives are just as important as ours in my opinion. These gorillas are endangered so we must help them so we can save their species. I think we could also promote tourism and economic growth by putting them in a reserve or popular zoos so they can be safe and preserved and fed properly. I can’t believe that these poor species are being shot at and I feel so bad for them and pray that we can save them. I also think it is awful that they are being murdered for their meat or just left there to rot or sold to collectors. I hope that these men are punished and end there war so these gorillas did not have to worry about being pushed around, killed, sold and abused because they were in a battle zone. I hope that these men stop and maybe think about others as they hurt these poor creatures and they should have to help shelter them so they can be safe and they should apologize for what they have done to these endangered mountain gorillas and I hope these men are sorry for what they did and I pray that these gorillas are saved along with these men and there souls
Recently a polish oil worker company worker discovered a plane to have been flown in WWII After 70 years the plane is still incredibly in pretty goo shape. These things just don’t happen. Most of the planes parts are still intact, and in pretty good shape for the amount of time that it was sitting in the desert. The fuselage, wings, and cockpit instruments are still able to be seen and have not been worn down. Egyptian officials have taken out the ammunition and guns for safety reasons. His identity has not yet been confirmed, and it has been published widely in British newspapers. It is said that the pilot was flying to another base to fix the landing gear that had been broken.

I think that this is just amazing thing to find! Ti is awesome that they can find stuff like this from that far back in time. I am just simply amazed that the plane could be in this good of shape so that they could have found it like this. It is really cool how there was still ammunition and guns and that the whole plane was still intact and it had not rotted away over the years. The only thing I wonder is where is the pilot? It is weird just to find an empty plane from that long ago. I hope that he made it out and someway maybe was living after this happened. But I don’t like to say this but I don’t think that that is how it happened, I think that he tried to walk to civilization but just ran out of like and didn’t make it. It is really sad when you think about his body could be just buried under a lot of sand in the middle of the desert. I think that they will probably use this find, and put it in a museum or something because this is an amazing find and I think its awesome how good the plane is, because I would think after that long in the desert that the plane would have rotted away a lot, but it didn’t.
This article is about how a man survived in the ocean by drinking rain water, and eating rotten fish. He was also spotted by a boat called the Princess Cruise, who did not stop to help the man who lies adrift. This man that survived for 28 days is now suing the company for their neglect and for them ignoring a man who is trying to survive in the ocean off of rainwater and rotten fish. There were about three people on board the ship that noticed this man, and took a picture of him waving his flag asking for help. The ship did not turn around to rescue this man. Now, the Princess Cruise Lines are saying that the captain was never notified of this stranded man, so that is why they did not turn around.

This is a bunch of bologna, in my opinion if these people told the staff of this man trying to survive, either the staff didn’t do anything about it, which is very mean, and should be punished for almost killing a man, or it is the captains fault for not turning around to help the man survive. Now, if it is the captain’s fault for not believing the passengers, or just trying to keep a schedule, I think that the government has failed us if that is the case. We should be more trusting in the people around us, and more loving to those, instead of trying to keep a schedule, or trying to get the most money you can. Back in the old days it wasn’t about who had the most money, it was just about who cared the most or who paid attention and helped the most. Over time I believe the media has changed us tremendously. Over time we started to care about the money, or the body, and not about whom the person is or what kind of heart they have. That is why the old times were much simpler and easier to live then it is today. I do believe this man should win this case on these reasons. I also believe the Princess Cruise Lines should accept what they did is wrong, accept the consequences, fire whoevers fault it is, and most importantly give this man a great apology.

Earlier this week on Monday, the people got back to their daily grind without a hitch, due to the fact that none of their electrical energy is being derived from a nuclear reactor. The weekend prior, the last nuclear reactor was shut down for maintenance and due to the nuclear disaster in March of 2011. The nuclear reactors have not been allowed to be turned back on. Junichi Sato of Greenpeace Japan says that since there is an increased chance of earthquakes in Japan, it is best to switch quickly from nuclear power to other reliable forms of energy supply. The shutdown of the reactor prompted celebration in the streets of Tokyo. The decision to stay off nuclear power may come with repercussions though, and some political officials have been urging local communities to turn back to nuclear power. Before the nuclear disaster, Japan relied on nuclear power for about 30% of its energy. As nuclear power is not being used, a steep increase in imports of fossil fuels has increased. Government has warned that summer energy demand may prompt periodic blackouts.

The decision to use nuclear power or not to is very difficult. Each side to the argument has pros and cons. They could rebuild and refortify the nuclear reactors and learn from their mistakes in the nuclear disaster, but this still creates nuclear waste and there is no 100% way of knowing that the reactors would be impervious to another earthquake or tsunami. To stay off nuclear power means to risk economic damage and impact citizen’s lives greatly. Many people believe that the sustainability and growth of Japan’s economy depends on nuclear energy. I hope that everyone can find a compromise in this heated debate.
This is a very hard thing to decide on. There is no plain and simple solution to this. It is a great thing that Japan has shut down their nuclear plants and are looking for new ways for energy. Maybe Japan will develop a new way to supply energy that is both eco-friendly and provides sufficient amounts of energy. If that were to happen, the whole world would be changed and the energy crisis would be solved. On the negative side, Japan has a ton of people and that means that it has very high energy needs. If Japan has to start importing fuel, that would probably cause more damage to the environment if it is from fossil fuels. Also, if Japan has periodic blackouts this summer, people will start to get really annoyed. Some blackouts probably won’t affect much and it will just have to be a compromise that people are going to have to make. One thing that I think Japan should do is to greatly expand and improve their hydroelectric power supplies since they are a very mountainous country and the rivers flowing from these mountains could be dammed up and used. If they are already, maybe Japan should figure out a way to make the dams larger for more energy output or improve the generators in the dams for increased output. They could just put in really big transformers to increase the voltage, then distribute it out to everyone. Or Japan could invest in tidal energy power plants, since they are an island country.

Reporters say that former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko ended her three-week hunger strike on Tuesday. The reason that she was on strike was because of protest against violence and for human rights in prison. She was sentenced to seven years in prison due to abuse of authority by signing overpriced gas contracts with Russia, costing the country more than $190 million during her time in office. The court ruled that she must pay every cent back. Tymoshenko claims that while she was in prison, she was beaten unconscious. Authorities are still looking into the investigation. The Amnesty International calls the allegations “politically motivated” and demanded for the release of the former minister. As for the prison Tymoshenko was in, there are more investigations going around looking for cruel behavior, torture and other similar things. Hillary Clinton also called for the release of her and of others in the government of Ukraine.

I have a few opinions on this, both positive and negative. Starting with the good, it is encouraging that notable people from different countries are taking notice of this, such as Hillary Clinton. When you have people from across the globe supporting you, I think that means that you are doing something right. Also, I feel that it is ridiculous that she would have to pay back $190 million to the government. Several variables come into play with this situation: for one, what if she was forced to sign it or was blackmailed to sign it? Also, there aren’t that many people in the world that are worth $190 million, so what if she doesn’t pay it back, does it go to on towards her family? If I were the Ukrainian government, I would look much further into this scenario because you never really know. Now to go onto the negative parts of this. For starters, I was not sure on the method of protest that Yulia chose was the most appropriate to get attention; obviously it did though. But, other forms of protest could’ve been used that might’ve been successful quicker, such as refusing to work or leave her cell. Also, if she was beaten unconscious, what were the guards doing at this point and time? Napping on the job? You clearly had to notice a yell or call for help or something of that nature. All in all, this is a happy moment, but it should be looked into much more.
I hate to hear about anyone who is being abused and nothing done about it. She was in a bad position and yet the best position. She had say in government and power which she wanted to help others. With the power she had, a Russian overpriced gas contract was signed. Is this a boycott (don't know the word for lousy spending - don't think there is one considering this doesn't happen very often). She was smart in doing this. $190 million is a lot of money especially for a 2-3 world country. I'm curious how long she was in office? If it were years then yah, I can see $190 million wasted. If it were short term, then yah that's a lot of money. For her to pay it back is unnecessary. For her to stand up against the Ukrainian government takes a lot of courage. This is another great example of women changing the world. I questioned if someone, or anyone, managed her spending? To pay back $190 million is inappropriate and chances are she doesn’t have that much nor will make that much. Most people don’t make than in a lifetime. You would have to be a surgeon for 868 years to make that much! I agree with Talmadge on the fact that other influential women like Hillary Clinton, step up to the plate and fight for justice. I can consider this a civil rights issue. Yulia didn’t approach this problem the right way. She could have gone a different route and make her point more effective. Yet at least she did something. We can stand here al’day and discuss what would be the most effective way. I do believe blowing $190 million wasn’t the best idea yet she did take action. Her way probably made this situation worse. The superior powers won’t help her problems. I know the U.S. won’t help because it doesn’t affect the American people as much as other issues. It’s a shame that’s how politics (foreign policy) works. Beaten unconscious is certainly unethical and violets human rights to the extreme yet it happens all around the world. There is too much suffering/injustice that we can’t help everyone’s problem. http://tinyurl.com/7k9mjxp

Well today former Libyan rebels attacked the Libyan Prime Ministers in protest over outstanding payments that weren't made to the rebels. The former goverment promised these rebels large amounts of payment for their many sacrifices and so far few have been payed. Many of the rebels are still heavily armed and militant over these fines. The attackers were dressed in army fatuiges and civilian clothing and used heavily armoured vehicles along with anti aircraft guns. It doesn't look like anyone was hurt in the attack and all the rebels did was fire shots and make demands that the goverment pay up. Previous attacks have also been made in other parts of Tripoli recently as the excitement of the Arab spring settles down. The goverment is working on disarming similar militants and absorbing them into the system of goverment soldiers. The soldiers are still angry and want to be payed for their valiant service in the takedown of Mohamar Ghadafi.

I personally think that there is a simple solution for this. The goverment keeps its promise and gives the soldiers what is coming to them and they will disarm and support the army. I understand though that the goverment is having some trouble paying them because they are a post revolutionary country. You can look back at America and see that we were having similar problems with farmers that were angry for where the countries economy was going. I think that the people of Libya also need to have patience for the goverment and put their trust in the goverment. Maybe the rebels and the goverment can cut a deal where the soldiers will not get exactly what they want but settle on a happy medium that benefits everyone. The rebels also should have some more patriotism over fighting for their country and realize exactly what that means. I don't even think that the American goverment payed the countless Native American and Colonial soldiers that helped us. Maybe if the rebels were just happy that they do not have to submit to Mohamar Ghadafi anymore we wouldn't have this problem. All I know is that a post revolutionary country always has problems with their economy, new laws, and bringing in new leaders all without having to pay back these rebels who don't seem happy enough that they are free. I personally think that that feeling is worth a million dollars everyday. I just pray for Libya and hope that other countries can follow its lead.
I also think it’s to be expected that the new, post-revolution government of Libya is having economic difficulties, so I really don’t think that it is okay for these former rebels to be demanding individual reparations. Really, I think it makes them look kind of greedy. By attacking the prime minister’s office, they come across as only concerned about themselves and not truly committed to rebuilding a new Libya. Sure, they deserve compensation, as does practically everyone in Libya. Libya is low on funds but the soldiers do need compensation and I think I would want the guys with guns happy instead of trying to keep my wallet fat. I almost think an intervention is needed but I don't think there will be one. All in all this is just a big annoying and stupid mess and this also goes along with my Arab spring project because I have to cover Libya. I just noticed Paul and Jpray are both in my group so this is very fitting but I really hope that all of this gets worked out because it is unnecessary drama that sucks up our time that could be used making our world a better place. I really wish they could solve it fast and get it done with but this will be stretched out into more annoying drama and will go on and on and on.
Another plot produced by Al Qaeda was discovered. United States officials described the event similar to the Christmas day bomb plot that was discovered and brought down. What was planned was there was a bomb that was disguised as a printer. Then the printer was to somehow be placed on the plane. Officials say that this bomb has definitely evolved since the Christmas Day bomb and they say that bombs will continue to evolve which is very scary. The bomb was discovered with some last minute intelligence given by Saudi Arabia that printers that had been disguised with bombs were discovered in England. And these bombs were so well disguised that they were not even detected by police. United States officials said that the printer was not built with metal, therefore making it very hard for security scanners in airports to detect. The good news is that the printer bomb never even got near an airport.

This story to me is very concerning for many reasons. One worry is how rapidly and accurately Al Qaeda is building and developing these new bombs. They are getting so clever and smart with these it is shocking. My second thought here is what can be done by airports and the country as a whole to protect against these increasingly clever and dangerous bombs being produced. Something desperately needs to be done because if not, one of these times Al Qaeda is going to be successful with a bomb. And when that happens, we are in huge trouble. On a more positive note, we always have to remember that we have some of the world’s smartest and most powerful people working against the Al Qaeda. I think that it is very important to keep faith in these people protecting us. Another thing to boost spirits is that you have to remember, Al Qaeda does not have huge amounts of money and resources to build these bombs. Sure, they have the ideas and plans for them, but building these costs a lot of money and it requires a significant amount of planning and brainpower. I think it is also important to note that our airports today take huge steps to protect and check who and what goes into an airplane. And who knows, maybe the Al Qaeda is close to being taken down. Every day we are taking huge steps to break down and get rid of that group.
It’s ironic how we had a post last week on al-Qaeda’s last days (leg). However, we see another plot against the United States yet this time, we were ready. That’s where the stress should be. We should stress how great the CIA has worked out and outsmarted al-Qaeda and its acts of terror. I do feel that the United States have taken great measures after dealing with 9/11; for instance, Congress approving the Patriot Act and improving airport security like Connor mentioned. We must also remember that the United States isn’t al-Qaeda’s only target (yet biggest damage done). We must also examine what this terrorist group’s motive is. They warned the world a holy war is coming. They preach their message of hatred and death. Al-Qaeda will wage Jihad for the sake of Allah. They were going to die for Allah. Osama bin Laden predicted a dark day for the U.S.; a day that will change who we are. The question is why? I wish, at times, there was no religion. Therefore we would have no conflicts. We wouldn’t do project on the Arab Spring. Religion is supposed to bring the world together, not tear it apart.
This just shows how smart Al Qaeda is but how much smarter we are than them. It seems like every time they try to develop a new bomb, we somehow discover it. Our country has been really lucky because we haven’t had a terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11. That shows that American security forces really stepped up their game and put an end to any more plots that came towards America. I also think that an article like this should show people who complain about security at airports how lucky they really are. If we didn’t keep improving our security, Al Qaeda would surely win. People don’t realize how lucky they are to have such great security forces and technology to protect them, but instead most people see it as an annoyance and a waste of time. What happened to people being patient? Can’t you wait for two minutes to go through a security checkpoint? Before airplanes and airports were invented, it used to take almost a year to get across the country! Now people complain because they have a two minute stop to make sure everyone is safe before they get on the plane! This could also be seen as a good thing because this means there are new threats which means airports and the government will end up investing in new scanners and such and the tech might not be there so theoretically that could open up new jobs but that is wishful thinking. But that is really scary and it shows that in some ways the Terror groups are not too far behind us because if they can get ahold of a rocket or something off a dead soldier or one that was left behind they can either reverse engineer it or just use it against us. I have a feeling security will beef up more and in a way it sucks for us because I know I hate taking my shoes off and all that but I guess it will save lives potentially. I do hope these attempts die down but thats not going to happen but we did recover documents from an insurgent in germany and some from Osama's compound talking about key people who plan and where they plan to attck in some new plots so hopefully that will give us an edge and let us smack'em down before they can do anything because the United States really does not need another 9/11 and I hope we dont get one.
This is extremely scary that these bombs have evolved so much! http://tinyurl.com/last-wwn-for-davis

Over the past weekend, Japan has finally shut down its last nuclear reactor. As of now, Japan is the first major economy to see the modern era without nuclear power. It has been the first time in four decades that there have been no nuclear reactors operating. Thousands of people celebrated in the streets when they heard about the last nuclear reactor being shut down. This event seemed like a response to many of the Japanese public who were suspicious of nuclear energy and its regulation, especially after the nuclear meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in March last year. As a result of this meltdown, the surrounding area around the plant has turned into a contaminated wasteland. Behind the scenes there are some problems, like there always are. Nuclear energy from the shut down reactors accounted for 30% of all of Japan’s energy. To try and compensate for this, Japan has increased its imports of fossil fuels. Despite this, the Democratic Party of Japan has been urging local communities to push for turning the reactors back on. Government officials worry about the result on Japan’s economy is the future. How will then world’s third-largest economy compensate for what is essentially a 30% loss of energy? The Japanese government predicts that it will not be able to keep up its current pace, referring to Japan’s energy requirements. The void that was nuclear energy will result in an energy crunch this summer and could possibly lead to rolling blackouts (that’s where certain parts of the county will not have access to electricity while other parts will).

On the cover this seems like a great plan, but on the inside I see many problems. For instance, how can Japan compensate for the nuclear energy that is not being produced anymore? Fossil fuels cannot answer this completely, but may be able to make up some lost ground. It all seems a bit silly to me. When I think of Japan, I think of a high-tech super-modern country that would be reliant on the energy that is provided. Despite what happened in March of last year, I still think that nuclear energy should be used. Many Japanese officials say the same as me. Japan cannot save energy to the point where the 30% lost is made up by being energy efficient. It just isn’t possible at this point in time. In the words of the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum chairman Takashi Imai, "We, the nuclear industry, will learn what should be learned from the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Based on that, we will endeavor to restore the image and position of nuclear energy." I agree with this statement. Japan needs it nuclear energy, and it can’t go from not relying on it from having it as one of their main energy sources. It just doesn’t seem reasonable. On the other side of this, former residents of Fukushima say that they are against any policy regarding nuclear energy. They say that the risk is too high with the earthquakes that occur there. Later this year we’ll see what end up being done about the energy situation in Japan.
I agree with you Davis; I am finding it difficult to see how Japan is going to be able to operate as an economic superpower with a 30% loss in energy. In addition to the electricity blackouts it will cause throughout the country, Japan will also start increasing its imports in fossil fuels. Personally, I find that by doing so, they are not really solving any problems and are just creating whole new ones. I understand that people were only pushing for an end to all nuclear power in Japan in the wake of the Fukushima disaster, fearing a similar disaster in the future. However, I don’t see why Japan has shut down all of their nuclear power plants; it would have been more practical and would have made more sense if they were to have just updated their other ones. The Fukushima plant disaster was so destructive and dangerous because the reactors weren’t up to date and had problems.
Okay wait a minute how in the world can they stop their nuclear power if that was the way they got money and started to live better again.
